Pet Birds

There’s no question that kids love pets. Young children are constantly learning about the world around them, and have a natural attraction to pets. It’s part of growing up. Kids learn how to care for other people by taking care of their pets. Whereas dogs and cats are fairly durable animals, pet birds have special
requirements in order for them to thrive. If you’re considering getting a pet bird, be sure you know how to take care of these feathered friends, before you bring them home. Here are a few important things you need to know about the care of pet birds.

Unlike dogs and cats, pet birds are fragile creatures that require you to strictly adhere to certain care giving procedures in order for them to thrive. Parakeets, cockatoos and parrots are some of the most popular pet bird choices. These pet birds can live long lives, as long as you know how to properly care for them.

In their nature, pet birds are just a heartbeat away from their wild cousins. You need to realize that these birds are still closer to their natural habitats and don't naturally adapt to life in our artificially warmed and cooled homes. Pet birds that are raised in a pet shop environment are better adapted to life in your home than some of the more exotic species.

For their safety and comfort, pet birds enjoy a safe haven such as is provided by a bird cage. However, they are very susceptible to respiratory problems caused by drafts. In their natural environment, birds seek sheltered places away from cool breezes. In a cage in your home, they won’t be able to do that. It’s up to you to protect them and provide the right shelter.

If you’re running the air conditioner, have a heavy bath towel handy to drape around their cage. You don’t need to cover the entire cage. Just wrap the towel around the top of the cage and let the towel hang, surrounding the area from which air is blowing.

Pet birds still rely heavily on instinct and you must remember that they’re essentially wild animals. When the sun goes down, they’re ready to go to sleep. At sunset, wrap that towel completely around the cage to simulate night in the wild. Instruct your kids to keep the noise down so their little feathered friend can get some sleep. This is necessary for a healthy pet bird that thrives.

A bird’s metabolic rate is very high, compared with other domesticated animals. They need a diet made up of high quality seeds, nuts and fruits. Look on the internet and question your pet shop owner to learn the correct diet for them. Get a book on the bird of your choice and read it thoroughly before you buy your bird.

When you feel you can properly care for that pet bird, bring him home for years of mutually loving enjoyment.
